I think there is a nice compromise somewhere between “we should not all be allowed to write about _____” and “everyone should write about _____”.

I like reading Natasha Vargas-Cooper’s film criticism (and mostly everything else she writes). She is fun & entertaining, though honestly I—me! not everyone!—would be more likely to go read a review by Karina Longworth if I wanted to get an opinion on something. Natasha’s angle on film criticism is great, I just know my own viewing habits are closer to Karina’s.

Film criticism is democratic! As long as we know where each writer stands, we should be able to decide for ourselves who we’d like to read & consider without shitting on anyone else’s work! Right?

Also, just sayin’, getting a book deal has very little to do with your ability to say anything interesting.
